SEEKING A CFO

The Chief Financial Officer & Vice President for Bonfield Forest Products’ Bonfield Sawmill Facility will be joining the organization during its start up stage and is posed to be one of the most modern mills in Northern Ontario. The CFO/VP will play a pivotal role in the attainment of the goals and mission of this implementation, along with a multitude of other major capital projects, operational initiatives and sophisticated partnerships, plus bring a focus on operational excellence to the finance team.

Reporting to the General Manager this position supports senior leadership in developing and executing a complex and detailed financial plan, while monitoring results related to the on-going sustainability of the mill and overseeing the annual operating budget. The CFO also ensures proper financial procedures and controls are in place, tied to overall budgeting, forecasting, business planning and related outcomes.

Specific Responsibilities

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) provides leadership, vision and strategic direction to a broad range of initiatives and issues. Participates in the development of the mill’s strategic and operational plans, and develops, implements, monitors and evaluates the organization’s long-term goals as well as the processes and systems required to action the strategic and operational plans.

Provides strong and effective financial leadership and sound business and financial advice. Identifies critical issues to be addressed to achieve short-, medium-, and long-term objectives, strategies, plans and programs that optimize service, improve customer relations, and meet government objectives.

In consultation with other members of the SLT, identifies and pursues opportunities that can enhance the mill’s revenue streams.

Works with colleagues and partners to look at new ways of approaching traditional problems or issues. Takes an entrepreneurial approach and enables creative thinking across the finance team.

Communicates clearly, architects change and leads the financial, capital asset, optimization and risk management program and strategies.

Financial Leadership:

Works with the General Manager, the Audit and Finance Committee regarding financial planning and oversight of The Bonfield Sawmill Facility. Accountable for the mill’s overall financial performance, capital planning and relevant project management delivery.

Executive Lead to the Board’s Audit and Finance Committee, prepares all agenda materials and implements the follow-up action from Committee decisions. Attends and contributes to other Board standing and adhoc committees as determined by the General Manager.

Supports and oversees the day-to-day financial operations of the Bonfield Sawmill Facility and considers opportunities for ongoing improvement and process efficiency.

Oversees all aspects of finance, accounting, internal controls and reporting, including, but not limited to business and project controls, cash management, monthly and annual reporting, financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting and planning.

Engages with the external and internal auditors as required and acts as a liaison to the finance department.

Leads the development of the mill’s annual operating and capital budgets, analyzes and makes recommendations regarding strategies to achieve budget and provides appropriate monitoring and reporting.

Leads the mill’s planning process, ensures stakeholder engagement, and develops and implements plans that support the mill’s strategic direction.

Facility and Operations Leadership

Leads and advances Bonfield Sawmill Facility’s environmental stewardship, be it through new construction, refurbishments and retrofits, or other regulatory and innovative initiatives that reduce the mill’s environmental footprint.

Provides leadership and stewardship to ensure capital projects are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget. Ensures system-wide value is achieved and strong alliances are maintained.

Prepares an annual and multi-year capital plan for renovation, repair and replacement of all facilities, equipment and capital assets.

Provides financial leadership and oversight of major facility and capital projects and assumes accountability for achievement of schedule, budget and scope.

Stakeholder Relationships

Builds and maintains productive, respectful relationships with key partners and stakeholders, particularly with the municipality, neighbouring First Nation communities, provincial and federal government agencies and their staff. Takes a systemic view and collaborates to enable alignment across the organization.

Collaborates and engages with employees and managers to develop innovative solutions and best practices which position the mill to achieve its vision, priorities and objectives.

Provides leadership and stewardship to ensure capital projects are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget. Ensures system-wide value is achieved and strong partnerships are maintained.

Position Requirements

10 plus years relevant and progressively rounded experience at the senior managerial level, preferably in a mill environment

Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation

Working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations at the Federal, Provincial and Municipal levels

Strong people management skills – ability of working cross-organizationally and with multiple stakeholders.
